Feelings Emotional Wellness
One often forgotten component of overall optimal health is our emotional health. Our feelings have important implications for how we view ourselves, our relationships and the world around us. This ability to maturely face and express these feelings can help us to meet life’s challenges without becoming overwhelmed or hopeless and without the need to dominate and force those around us.
Entrepreneurs And Burnout
Burnout is a state of fatigue while feeling frustrated, overworked, and unappreciated. Burnout can be a serious consequence of an unbalanced life and occurs when a person persists with a way of life that doesn’t meet their expectations or exerts too many demands on their energy.
Ensure That Irate Customers Don't Rattle Your Staff
Negative attitudes and behaviours are usually expressed when our customers are stressed out or they just don’t have the energy to use better communication skills, judgment and manners. Being stressed out is chronic in today’s society, especially during the busy Christmas season. We often have too much to do, too many decisions to make and are usually running behind schedule. The difficulty behind the negative attitudes and behaviours of our customers is that they are highly “toxic” to our staff.
Emotional Abuse
Emotional abuse is the tearing down of another human being and it can be the result of inappropriately handling one’s emotions, the excessive need to control others and the situations around them, or it can be learned from those who have had influence on the person such as their parents, coaches or supervisors.
Eliminating Sexual Harassment
Dealing with sexual harassment can be very difficult and unfortunately more than a third of working Canadians have experienced it or been effected by it. It can trigger a variety of stress-related illnesses, relationship difficulties and upset productivity and engagement. Educating around sexual harassment and developing strong policies and procedures to deter it are the most effective means of minimizing its occurrence and impact.
Deep Breathing Simple But Effective
Preventing illness, slowing down the aging process and living life to the fullest - these are a few of the reasons Canadians are reaching out towards a healthier lifestyle. One of the simplest and most effective strategies is deep breathing. Though it comes naturally it doesn't meant that we do it correctly.
Dealing With Difficult Employees
Understanding why some people become more difficult or negative, and when they are more likely to act that way can prevent that build up of tension from happening. So why are people difficult? The answers may lie in different areas, some related to the environment and some related to the “payoff” of using certain behaviours.
Back To School And Morning Chaos
Avoid morning chaos by getting yourself and your family into a predictable and simple routine with these tips.
Avoiding Road Rage And Keeping Your Commuting Cool
Have you ever had a bad day and then while driving home some "jerk" makes you even more angry? These are the conditions that are perfect for road rage. Almost everyone has experienced a similar situation and we can find hundreds of news articles on incidents of road rage.
5 Ways To Beat The Monday Blahs
Having trouble returning to work on Mondays? Feel like you never really left? Enjoy your job, but hate getting out of bed? You may be struggling with the blahs, which may not necessarily be a reflection of your like or dislike for your job. Your Monday morning struggle may be due to dealing with the transition from one dimension of your life to another.
Season Of Darkness SAD
Have you noticed a change in your mood or energy since the clocks went back? For many of us, daylight savings time heralds the beginning of the winter blues and, in some cases, the more severe Seasonal Affective Disorder. Healthy Ontario’s stress and wellness expert, Beverly Beuermann-King sheds some light on what, for many, is a season of darkness.
PTSD In An Age Of Uncertainty
Stress, depression, and anxiety. We know that they can have profound effects on our health and the lives of those around us. And now we are hearing more about Posttraumatic Stress.
Insights Into Children And Suicide
Myth – Children do not attempt or complete suicide. In fact, 3% of our children are suicidal at any given time and our rates are increasing among our youth. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among our children ages 15-19 and studies show that 1 in 7 students have seriously considered suicide. Identifying those children at risk for suicide can be problematic in that communication skills may be limited, emotional development may lead to spur of the moment decision-making, and support networks limited.
Insights Into Children And Depression
Clinical Depression is more than just the ‘blues’. According to the DSM-IV, the standard reference on mental illness, it is a “biochemical disorder where a person feels very sad for an extended period of time and where this state interferes with their everyday life.” Clinical Depression affects about 3% of children, 8% of adolescents and 10% of adults.
Great Winter Defeated The Winter Blahs
Driving around the city, you can’t help but notice the number of people out on the sidewalks and in the parks. All are seemingly enjoying these glorious winter days.
Fighting The Winter Blues
Reportedly 65% of the Canadian population notices a difference in their level of mood and energy in the fall and winter compared to the sunny days of summer. This decrease in mood and energy colours the way in which we handle the other areas of our life that compete for our energy and attention.
Fall Back SAD
“Fall back” will have an incredible impact for thousands that are plagued by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) come Daylight Savings Time in October. Many, reportedly 65% of the Canadian population, notice a difference in their level of mood and energy in the fall and winter compared to the sunny days of summer. Further research in Ontario suggests that between 2% and 5% of the general population may have SAD and another 15% have a less severe experience described as the “winter blues”.
Excessive Stress And Depressions
Stress does play a role in the illness Depression. However, stress is not the cause of the illness, but stress can bring the symptoms about, or make the symptoms worse.
De-Mystifying Delusions And Hallucinations
Repeatedly, when we hear someone refer to hallucinations or delusions, our mind conjures up images of a person who is crazy and who is a threat to our safety. Often we think of someone with Schizophrenia. However, these two symptoms can be a part of a variety of illnesses. Delusions and hallucinations are the psychotic symptoms that someone may experience when the brain is not functioning properly. They can be a part of the illness of Schizophrenia, but can also occur in someone who is experiencing deep Depression or Bipolar Disorder. Hallucinations and delusions are not the same thing, but can play on each other.
Beyond The Baby Blues Into PTSD
50-80% of new mothers have measurable changes in mood, energy, sleep and eating during the first two weeks after delivery.
